Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar in first half on Thursday, following sustained selling of the American currency by banks and exporters. Besides, the rupee derived its strength from strong foreign capital inflows and some recovery in domestic equities. Dollar’s weakness against other currencies in the global market also helped rupee gain. On the global front, the yen surrendered its early gains in Asia on Thursday, while sterling pushed higher but remained capped ahead of a Bank of England meeting that is expected to deliver an easing to blunt the economic fallout of Britain's vote to leave the European Union.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 66.90, stronger by 15 paise from its previous close of 67.05 on Wednesday. The currency touched a high and low of 67.03 and 66.8850 respectively. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) reference rate for the dollar stood at 67.20 and for Euro stood at 74.34 on July 13, 2016. While the RBI’s reference rate for the Yen stood at 64.53, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 89.2880.The reference rates are based on 12 noon rates of a few select banks in Mumbai.
