Sibal launches Airtel’s 4G service in Kolkata; terms 3G ‘not successful’

After the 2G and 3G services, the telecom major Bharti Airtel has launched 4G services in India, one of the largest telecom market. The telecom minister Kapil Sibal has launched 4G services in the metro city - Kolkata and Airtel has become the first 4G technology provider in the country.

Terming the 3G services as ‘not successful’ Sibal said '3G has not delivered because they paid such huge prices for the spectrum and there is no liquidity in the market for them to invest in the infrastructure and the devices to deliver 3G, for which 2G was successful and 3G was not successful.'

Bharti Airtel has bagged license to offer 4G services in four telecom circles - Kolkata, Maharashtra, Punjab and Karnataka. The next telecom circle on the company’s radar is Bangalore wherein the 4G services are likely to be launched in next 30 days. The other players are yet to announce plans to rollout 4G services.

The telecom industry is aiming high on the 4G services, a successor to the 3G and 2G families, is expected to be five times quicker than 3G services. It would offer services such as high-definition mobile TV and video conferencing. Wrapped in the scam, the 2G services are not fully offered in the country, as nearly 122 licenses issued by then Telecom Minister A Raja were recently quashed by Supreme Court.
