Emami, Kolkata-based FMCG firm aims to strengthen its product portfolio by entering into the glucose energy drink category under the Zandu brand. It has started test marketing the 'Zandu Gluco Charge' in West Bengal. The company plans to roll out the product across the country within a year in a phased manner.
The company is likely to introduce the product in West Bengal first as it has a very high consumption of glucose because of the extreme heat and humidity. Depending on the results of the test marketing we are planning for a pan India launch at the earliest. The company is looking at southern states, including Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, as the next market for the glucose drink.
Emami, which at present sells brands, including Boroplus antiseptic cream and Mentho Plus, has ambitious plans in the glucose category which is estimated to be around Rs 600 crore, growing at around 16% year on year. Heinz and Dabur are the two major players in the market currently.
