India exported meat and meat products worth $568 million during April-May of this fiscal. As per information provided by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the overseas shipments stood at 192,748 tonnes in quantity terms, in the first two months of this fiscal. The main export destinations include Vietnam, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The minister added that from time to time representations are being received from some religious/social organizations demanding ban on export of meat and its products but currently there is no proposal to lift the ban on export of beef. India mainly exports processed meat and meat of buffalo, sheep and goat.

Last year in October, the country’s buffalo meat exporters, world leaders in the trade, were struggling to sustain their momentum due to a number of obstacles including heightened political backlash, fall in sales to traditional big buyers such as Vietnam and Egypt, and a WHO health warning.
