It is estimated that the opening up of the integrated check-post (ICP) at Attari border off Amritsar in Punjab will raise the annual volume of trade between India and Pakistan to $8 billion from the present $2.6 billion, within the next two years, according to a study by the industry body ASSOCHAM.

Equipped with new infrastructure, the ICP will be able to give clearance to 600 trucks every day, instead of the 150-odd cleared earlier. Located about 30 km from Amritsar, ICP at Attari has been set up on an area of 130 acres at an overall cost of Rs. 120 crore. It will house state-of-the-art facilities to deal with security, customs and immigrations requirements for passenger and cargo traffic through rail and road.

Pakistan has recently granted the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India and has also moved towards a negative list approach while trading with India. Both nations have also agreed that 137 items can be traded by road through the Attari border which is the cheapest and shortest trade route for both the nations.

The trade between the two nations through the land route presents tremendous scope for generation of revenue and employment as Pakistan has also conveyed its willingness to give India transit facilities for trade with Afghanistan and Iran - especially in energy and infrastructure projects. Petroleum products, iron and steel, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automobiles, heavy industries, electricity trade, small and medium enterprises, IT and IT-enabled services, telecommunications, transportation and financial services can be immediately exported to Pakistan from India.
