India's foodgrains production to touch 250 million tonne in 2011-12: ICAR

India's food grains production is pegged at 250 million tonnes for 2011-12, according to S Ayyappan, Director-General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The food grain production for 2011-12 is higher by 18.35 million tonnes than 2010-11. Foodgrain production in India includes rice, wheat, pulses, oilseeds, sugar, cotton, milk, meat, fish, eggs etc.

As per ICAR, the year 2010-11 is considered to be the best agricultural year for India as food grain production in the year amounted to 245 million tonnes.

Further, India's fisheries production by 2017 is expected to rise to 15-16 million tonnes from the present 6-8 million tonnes. The ICAR estimate is marginally close to government’s estimate of 250.42 million tonnes.
