Maharashtra government heaved a sigh of relief in the ongoing politically grappled Adarsh Housing Society scam, as two-member panel, in its interim report stated land belongs to the state government and not to army. The judicial commission of inquiry investigating the scam also held that the building was not reserved for war heroes and Kargil widows.

The commission, which includes Bombay High Court judge J A Patil and former State Chief Secretary P Subramanian has submitted its interim report to the government on April 13, 2012. The report has brought issues of ownership of the land and if it was reserved for war heroes and Kargil widows in the spotlight. The allegations so far state that the land which belonged to the Defence Ministry was allotted by Maharashtra government to the Adarsh Society and the 31-storey building came up infringing several civic and environmental norms.

Adarsh Housing Society is a cooperative society located in the plush area of Colaba in Mumbai city. However, it was revealed that houses were not allotted to the beneficiaries and were instead taken over by politicians, bureaucrats and top ranking military personnel. The politicians named under this scam are the former Chief Ministers of Maharashtra state - Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Ashok Chavan. Following the slew of events the state government, in January 2011, had appointed the aforementioned two-member panel to investigate the issues viz., ownership of land, violations of coastal zone regulations.
