Nasheed expresses disappointment over India’s response in his ouster

After getting ousted on February 07, 2012, former President of Maldives Nasheed today expressed disappointment over India’s response to the slew of events in the island nation . Nasheed is presently in India to meet Minister Manmohan Singh and some top officials with an intention to urge India to intervene and take coercive action to conduct elections by end of 2012.

According to Nasheed, ‘India bungled up and should have said this was a coup at gunpoint. They should have held to their horses, I was shocked and I am disappointed and sad’. By adding further, this erstwhile President stated that India has key role to play and can do so to take back the smallest Asian country’s democracy on track.

President Mohamed Nasheed’s beleaguered government was trying hard to cope with the debt burden left by the former government, 2004 tsunami’s after effect on the economic condition. At the dusk of 2011, the opposition which was in majority in Parliament held a mass conference with around 20,000 people in it with the notion that Nasheed’s government was lagging to protect Islam. This event became a foundation of the nation-wide protest against government. Amidst these slew of events, on January 16, 2012, the now ouster President ordered army to arrest Judge Abdulla Mohamed, the chief justice of the Maldives Criminal Court, as he was prolonging and blocking prosecution of cases against allies of former President Gayoom. This added fire to countrywide agitations, Nasheed to halt these ordered police to suppress the protestors. However, police instead joined the agitation coercing resignation of Nasheed in front of media.
