The category “A” mine owners from the state of Karnataka have a reason to cheer today. After a long wait, the Supreme Court has partially lifted ban which was imposed way back in 2011 over environmental concerns and illegal mining activities. Only state-owned NMDC was permitted to mine and explore up to 1 million tonnes of ore from captive blocks located in the state.

In another development, the SC’s appointed central empowered committee (CEC) has directed CBI to investigate illegal mining in the state and bribery charges against the former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.

In 2011, the lid of Illegal mining scam was opened up with the confession of Yeddyurappa of his involvement in the illegal iron-ore export racket at Belekeri Port involving 35 lakh metric tonnes of iron ore. This scam brought Bellary district of Karnataka to the centrestage and also coerced then Chief Minister Yeddyurappa to put down his resignation. Besides Yeddyurappa, Janardhana Reddy, a former minister in the BS Yeddyurappa government, Galli Janardhana Reddy and B V Sreenivas Reddy were booked for illegal mining in the state.
