23 Apr 2012 Evaluate

Beating the revenue earned through its succeeding family member 3G by seven times, 2G spectrum has been pegged at Rs 700,000 crore, as per reports. The auction of 2G spectrum is eyed widely by the Indian telecom industry along with global players who had lost their stakes in the scam.

The telecom watchdog Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has issued set of guidelines for this auction. The auction will be open to all companies and TRAI is slated to maintain maximum transparency considering the past auction and its con. The spectrum will be auctioned in phases and not in one go with initial issue of 5MHz of spectrum. The recommended reserve price for 700 megahertz (Mhz) is three times of 3G reserve price.

After the high end drama in parliament followed by indictment of various ministers and corporate honchos and their arrests, the Supreme Court on February 07, 2012 had quashed the 122 defiled licenses. These licenses were issued by then telecom minister A Raja at throw away prices. A Raja is currently loged in Tihar jail as the trail is under process while few of other accused are out on bail.
