The chain of allegations on Union Minister P Chidambaram in 2G case appears to be lengthening as the Janta party chief Subramanian Swamy acussed him for delaying Aircel- Maxis deal to allow his son Karti Chidambaram obtain kickbacks from Maxis. Swamy has accordingly presented the evidence against Karti to the media and has demanded CBI probe.

Swamy alleged that a transaction worth Rs 26,00,444 took place, on March 31, 2006, between Advantage Strategic Consulting Private Limited and Aircel Televentures Limited which owned Aircel and Aircel cellular. Karti holds majority stake in Advantage Strategic Consulting and it was shown that he has lend this amount, however, was later converted to shares. Thus, Karti became 5% shareholder in Aircel which was later acquired by Maxis.

“These dubious transactions show that as a finance minister, P Chidambaram ensured that the Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance on Aircel- Maxis deal would be cleared, only if his son Karti P Chidambaram-controlled company gets share in Sivakumar’s Aircel Televenture Ltd to share the booty from Maxis,” Swamy alleged. Swamy has also written to the CBI, Enforcement Directorate and Registrar of Companies. In addition to this, CBI has alleged that Maran received Rs 547 crore as kickbacks.

Maxis is the Malaysia based business group and one of the alleged beneficiaries in the 2G scam. Besides this, erstwhile Aircel Chief C Sivasankaran said that former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran favoured the group to takeover his company. To return this favour, investments were made through Astro network in Sun TV-owned by the Maran family.
