PM Modi violating Constitution by avoiding Parliament: Yechury

21 Nov 2016 Evaluate

Continuing his attack on the Centre over demonetization, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury came down heavily on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for steering clear of the parliament and asserted that by doing so he was violating the Indian Constitution.

Outside the parliament, Yechury said that the Prime Minister’s statement on the demonetization was necessary, especially since his radical move had created turbulence across the nation. He said that ‘We want the Prime Minister’s clarification over the matter. It is his responsibility towards the people. The Constitution begins with ‘we the people’ and the Prime Minister is disrespecting the same Constitution on whose basis he came to power’.

Talking about the furore in the Rajya Sabha following his demand of an obituary from the centre for those who have died from the effects of demonetization, Yechury said that the Centre could not deny these details. ‘More than 70 people have been killed from the effects of demonetization and we asked the Centre to pay their respects and make an obituary reference. Those who died are our own people after all, but the Centre has flatly refused us. What is the government’s objection to that?’

This is a matter of humanity, people died from lack of money, 11 bank employees died, the CPI (M) Leader said. Meanwhile, the family of the deceased senior citizen, who allegedly died due to standing in a queue for replacing old currency notes, has moved the Supreme Court seeking Rs 50 lakh compensation from the centre.
