03 May 2012 Evaluate

The Tatra truck scam which came into light with the confession of Army Chief has now grappled Defence Minister AK Antony as a media agency today reported that latter was aware of the deal and quality of trucks and yet didn’t stop their sales. Post this the Defence Minister was bombarded with questions by the members of opposition party.

Responding to the BJP MPs, Antony said that government had nothing to hide in this deal and every procurement of the Tatra vehicles from 1986 onwards met the requirements of Army. The Defence Minister also claimed that his ministry had never imposed any Tatra orders on the Army, however, the report claimed that “If Antony were to go through the files, he would have noticed the several audit findings that point out Tatra trucks were imposed on the army many a time.”

The slew of claims are from the minutes of meeting between army officials and Antony in September 2008 whherein the former notified that Tatra trucks “no longer met the operational requirements of the Indian Army.”

In March 2012, Army chief Gen V K Singh uncovered the blanket over the alleged scam wherein he alleged of being offered Rs 14 crore bribe for to clear a deal for supplying sub-standard Tatra trucks. Singh alleged that Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh offered bribe on behalf of truck suppliers Tatra and Vectra. The army press release dated March 05 reported names of Tatra and BEML. So far around 7,000 Tatra trucks have been bought by the army since 1986. Presently, CBI is investigating the scam and various deals related to it.
