Planning Commission allocates Rs 250 crore for implementation of NMFP

09 May 2012 Evaluate

For the financial year 2012-13, the Planning Commission has allocated Rs 250.00 crore for the implementation of National Mission on Food Processing (NMFP). The state government will start preparatory activities / advance action for this scheme for which it has obtained Government’s approval. Besides, the Centre has also approved release of Rs 51 crore for this purpose and released funds to few states including Andhra Pradesh.

In the Budget 2012 document, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee stated that the food processing sector has been growing at an average rate of over 8 percent over the past 5 years.  In order to have a better outreach and to provide more flexibility to suit local needs, a new centrally sponsored scheme titled ‘National Mission on Food Processing’ would be started, in cooperation with the State Governments in 2012-13.

The salient features of the NMFP are to realize the Ministry’s next leap forward in terms of ensuing requisite growth impetus and value addition to the sector; decentralized approach; greater role of State/UTs; better outreach and effective supervision and monitoring.

Above all, in the selection of beneficiaries, location of projects etc. for the development of food processing sector the NMFP would provide flexibility to states / UTs. This initiative of the Ministry would give an impetus to food processing industries in the country.
