Government approves establishment of Spice Parks

09 May 2012 Evaluate

To establish common infrastructure facilities like cleaning, processing, colour sorting, grading and packing facilities etc., in the major spices growing centre’s the Government has approved establishment of Spice Parks. This initiative by the Government is primarily to empower the spice farmers through value addition and quality improvement of spices which in turn would ensure better price realization.

At present two spice parks located at Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh and Puttadi in Idukki district of Kerala have started functioning. Besides, another Spice Park at Jodhpur in Rajasthan has been inaugurated on April 07, 2012.

Also, for testing and evaluating the quality of spices being exported from the country the Government has further approved establishment of seven Regional Quality Evaluation Lab-cum-Training centre in major Port cities. This is in addition to the Quality Evaluation Laboratory already functioning in Head Office of Spices Board, Cochin. The seven centres where establishment has been approved are at Mumbai in Maharashtra, Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Chennai and Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, Kandla in Gujarat and Kolkata inWest Bengal.

Additionally, the Spice Board has given its approval for establishment of Spice Park at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, Mehsana in Gujarat, Kota in Rajasthan and Guna in Madhya Pradesh. The exporters can set up their unit in the Parks for processing spices under the terms and conditions of the Board.

Besides, India is facing stiff price competition from other major spices producing countries like Vietnam, Guatemala, China etc., in the export of different spices.  In the case of Pepper, Vietnam which is being the largest producer and having higher productivity is in a position to offer their produce at a lower price as compared with Indian pepper. Similarly for Cardamom, being the largest producer and having negligible domestic consumption, Guatemala is selling their produce at a lower price. China also now offers Chilli at a lower price than the Indian produce.
