Merely two days ahead of the scheduled hearing of the petition, the government decided to withdraw it from the Supreme Court. The review plea was filed by the centre seeking clarification from SC that natural resources should be allotted through “auction process” only to private companies and not on the basis of first-come-first-served (FCFS) policy.

Cheering the withdrawal, the key petitioner and senior advocate Prashant Bhushan said, “On 1 May, we had made detailed written submissions justifying auctions in natural resources, also annexing the Chawla committee report had recommended auction of natural resources. Because of that the government has today circulated the attached letter seeking withdrawal of petition. The government clearly doesn’t want to risk any observations by SC, as that would hurt them and also make their presidential reference redundant.”

In another development in 2G scam, former telecom secretary - Siddharth Behura has been granted bail who was loged in Tihar jail since February 2011 for his alleged involvement in the scam. Behura’s bail plea was rejected earlier by the Dehi HC reasoning that he might influence the investigations. Behura’s then boss A Raja is still in prison.
