Airtel Payments Bank, a subsidiary of Bharti Airtel, has opened over one lakh savings accounts in Uttar Pradesh within the first two weeks of its launch in the state. Approximately 60% of these accounts have been opened in rural areas, underlining the massive scope for serving customers, particularly in unbanked and under-banked pockets of the state. The company was among the 11 entities that bagged in-principle approval from RBI in 2015 to launch payments banks. It started payment bank services on the pilot basis in Rajasthan, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana last year.
Bharti Airtel is a leading integrated telecommunications company with operations in 18 countries across Asia and Africa. The company ranks amongst the top 3 mobile service providers globally in terms of subscribers.
