India’s Tea production in 2016 was marginally up by 2.51% to1239.15 million kg. The good production in 2016 is mainly attributed to favorable climatic conditions during the cropping season. In 2015, Tea production of the country was at 1208.66 million kg.
Assam has produced 642.18 million kg of Tea in 2016 which was at 631.22 million kg in 2015, while West Bengal produced 357.47 million kg in comparison to 324.5 million kg in the previous year. Production of Tea in South India also rose from 212.21 million kg in 2015 to 227.57 million kg in 2016.
According to Tea Board data the export of Tea from the country showed a declining trend and witnessed a fall of 2.46% in the period January to November 2016. India exported 197.01 million kg of Tea in the first 11 months of 2016, which was at 202.12 million kg in the same period of 2015. In the world market, Indian Tea faced tough competition from Kenyan Tea in 2016.
