CBI to probe Yeddyurappa for illegal mining; may shatter dream to incumbent state CM

The illegal mining ghost is back to haunt former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa and two other companies viz., JSW Energy and Adani Enterprises for alleged involvement in Karnataka mining scam. Supreme Court today has directed the CBI to probe the role of aforementioned and submit its report by August 03, 2012.

The order comes close on the heels of recommendations by the Central Empowered Committee which was appointed by Supreme Court probe irregularities in mining.

Yeddyurappa has been accused for receiving a kickback worth Rs 6 crore from mine operator Praveen Chandra as a favour for facilitating license. Of the said amount Rs 2.5 crore was given to a firm run by Yeddyurappa‘s son-in-law RN Sohan Kumar and remaining was credited to another firm owned by son Vijayendra and his brother BY Raghavendra. However, responding to the report, Vijayendra said “Chandra’s mining application was made to the central government in 2002 and approved by it in 2006 when Yeddyurappa was not the chief minister. He assumed office in May 2008.”

The former Karnataka chief minister had resigned on July 31, 2011 following the allegations from opposition and pressure from his party - BJP’s high command. Besides mining irregularities, Yeddyurappa was accused for allotment of prime land in Bangalore in favour of his sons. According to reports, Yeddyurappa’s family bought the land for Rs 40 lakh and sold for Rs 20 crore, resulting in huge profits. Following this then Chief Minister declared his assets, however, this could not stop from getting arrested on October 15, 2011. However, was given clean-chit by the High Court of Karnataka and since then Yeddyurappa has been pressurizing BJP high command to reinstate his Chief Ministership but this new investigations may shatter his dream.
