India has potential to be a global bio-pharma center

14 May 2012 Evaluate

The government needs to adequately encourage the bio-pharma and healthcare sector to help unleash its true potential, as India has the potential to be a ‘global hub’ in the sector. As per William W Chin, Executive Dean for Research at Harvard Medical School, India is an important player in the global pharmaceutical sector and can help the world in understanding diseases.

It can help the world in creating new medicine for the future. He is also of the opinion that the Indian government should come out with policies that will encourage academicians to commercialize their ideas/ research. The Department of Pharmaceuticals Joint Secretary, Raja Sekhar Vendru, stated that the government has commissioned Ernst & Young (E&Y) to conduct a study and come out with recommendations to make India a global hub of research and development in the bio pharma sector.

As part of its effort to make India a global hub in R&D by 2020, the 12th Plan proposal of the Department of Pharmaceuticals is focused on making the National Institutes of Pharmaceuticals Education and Research (NIPERs) focal institutes for such new drug discovery and innovation.

There are six NIPERs at present; the proposal is to add 10 more such national institutes across the country, which would give an impetus to government objectives in this regard.
