Varun Industries’ group company Varun Energy Corporation, Madagascar, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Department of Atomic Energy to sell entire heavy mineral concentrate like Ilmenite, Rutile, Leucoxene, Monazite (rate earth), Zircon, Sillimanite and Garnet.
As per the agreement, the PSU under Department of Atomic Energy will purchase entire mineral concentrate from Varun Mines to ensure suitability of the constituent minerals for its local operations. Varun will install and operationalize its plant at Madagascar to supply Mineral Concentrate to PSU in the next 8-10 months and will supply around 5 lakh metric ton per annum of Heavy Minerals. Varun group took technical support from Indian Rare Earth (IREL) for carrying out the Mineralogical Analysis on bulk composite samples from the permit areas.
The report reveals that these Heavy Mineral Sand contain Ilmenite 19 to 32 percent, Monazite 0.8 to 1.8 percent, Rutile and Leucoxene 0.2 percent (each), Zircon 1.2 to 2.1 percent, Garnet 0.5 to 1.5 percent, Sillimanite 0.8 percent and other heavy minerals mainly Spinel 0.4 to 0.8 percent. These features make them a world class deposit since the low slime contents with THM in the range of 20-30 percent THM is considered to be high grade Mineral Sand Deposit.
Further plant analysis and mineral composition characterization are under progress at IREL Laboratories.
