Oppositions reject exit polls, say all rumours will end by tomorrow

10 Mar 2017 Evaluate

Dismissing the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections as per exit polls, the opposition said the predictions are insulting the people of the democracy and that everything would be clear once the results are declared tomorrow. Slamming the television channels for continuously telecasting such shows, Congress leader Renuka Chowdhruy said instead of showing real issues they are spreading lies and rumours.

Chowdhury said that ‘I can understand the compulsion of TV channels. They don't seem to think anything else is of national priority and news. Continuous shows on exit polls and getting panellists to talk are insulting the intelligence of the people in Indian democracy. It's a matter of few hours. Let's wait and watch’.

Echoing similar sentiments, Congress' alliance partner, Samajwadi Party (SP) maintained that UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav would form his government with full majority. Samajwadi Party leader Ravidas Mehrotra said that many a times, these exit polls have turned out to be wrong. So is this exit poll. Akhilesh Yadav will be forming his government in Uttar Pradesh with full majority.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said scientific basis of exit polls is a big question mark and they have turned out to be inaccurate in the past. He said that ‘whatever the exit polls may show, the result will be known once the counting is done. Exit polls which were shown last time were absolutely a flip of the actual results. Let's see what happens. There is a wait of 24 hours’. Pollsters have predicted the BJP as the largest party in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur while a setback for SAD-BJP alliance in Punjab. As voting wraps up in five states - Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand, the results will be declared on March 11.
