Akhilesh digs out predecessor's scams one after other

Akhilesh Yadav, who promised to take the state on growth and development path, has began his work with unearthing scams of former Chief Minister Mayawati. Akhilesh, last month, had opened lid of toilet scam worth Rs 2,900 crore followed by elephant statues scam. The fresh scam to hit the headlines today is the “palm tree scam” worth over Rs 55 crore. The current Chief Minister, who sworn in on March 15, 2012, has ordered judicial probe in all the aforementioned matters.

The state police, who are investigating matter, have stated that Mayawati had imported as many as 37,000 palm trees from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh for the parks and monuments built in the name of Dalit icons in Lucknow and Noida. Of these trees around 25,000 were planted in various parks and monuments in Lucknow and rest in Noida, the dalit leader had paid Rs 10,000 per tree for plantation to the contractors. The plantation task was assigned to the state government unit - Rajkiya Nirman Nigam.

However, detailed examination on survival and required climatic conditions was not done and as a result only 10% of the total imported trees survived. The BSP’s spendthrift government imported the trees once again, which later dried up, however, no spends were done them as Mayawati lost the elections.

According to Akhilesh Yadav, the sum of all the scams during Mayawati’s regime could go up to Rs 40,000 crore. Besides this, presently CBI is investigating Rs 5,000 crore scam National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) implementation scam during Mayawati's tenure as Chief Minister. High Court had also cornered the BSP government in acquisition of land at cheap prices from farmers and selling them to builders. Also, building were constructed and later demolished and replaced with new one leading to a huge loss to the government. The Comptroller and Auditor General has also made addition to the list of Mayawati’s scams who found out irregularities in sale of 21 government sugar mills, amounting to Rs 12,000 crore. The construction of canals in Bundelkhand has paved way for an approximately Rs 600 crore scam.
