The CBI has begun its probe into the horse trading which resulted in cancellation of Rajya Sabha polls held on March 30 in Jharkhand. The investigating agency today launched search operations at residences and offices of around 32 MLAs from Jharkhand state belonging to ruling JMM, Ajsu party and opposition RJD and Congress.

The CBI in 36 teams raided Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh, Godda, Bihar’s Banka district and Giridih residences of these MLAs. Also, one team of CBI searched residence of independent candidate in Kolkata. The case has been registered under section 171F (undue influence) and 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to an order lawfully promulgated by a public servant) and on April 21, 2012, CBI had searched premises of three MLAs and industrialist R K Agarwal who was one of the candidate.

The CBI investigation comes close on heels of the decision by the Jharkhand High Court in April, ordering a CBI enquiry in the logrolling. Accordingly the state Chief Minister Arjun Munda gave away “no objections” to the agency for conducting investigations.

On the March 30 morning, the bi-yearly polls of Rajya Sabha in Jharkhand state for two seats were held and the income tax officials seized a car which allegedly belonged to R K Agarwal, was carrying Rs 2.15 crore. This coerced the Election Commission to cancel the polls on next day itself.
