The production of tea in the country stood at 13.54 million kgs in February, a drop of 21% from a year earlier, as a severe drought in the southern state of Tamil Nadu hit plucking. India is the world’s second biggest tea producer and exports CTC (crush-tear-curl) grade mainly to Egypt, Pakistan and the UK and the orthodox variety to Iraq, Iran and Russia.
The production of tea in North India stood at 1.99 million kg in February 2017. The production in West Bengal stood at 1.60 million kg, while output in Assam stood at 0.35 million kg in February 2017.
Tea production in South India stood at 11.55 million kg in February 2017. The production in states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka stood at 8.41 million kg, 2.83 million kg and 0.31 million kg, respectively.
