Mineral production rises by 3.3% in February

The index of mineral production of mining and quarrying sector for the month of February 2017 stood at 140.6, was 3.3% higher as compared to February 2016. The cumulative growth for the period April- February 2016-17 over the corresponding period of previous year has been (+) 1.6 percent. The total value of mineral production (excluding atomic & minor minerals) in the country during February 2017 was Rs 22,395 crore. The contribution of coal was the highest at Rs 9,519 crore (43%). Next in the order of importance were -- Petroleum (crude) Rs 5,084 crore; Iron ore Rs 2,763 crore; Natural gas (utilized) Rs 2,025 crore; Lignite Rs 811 crore and Limestone Rs 560 crore. These six minerals together contributed about 93% of the total value of mineral production in February 2017.

Production level of important minerals in February 2017 were -- Coal 640 lakh tones (LT), Lignite 46 LT, Natural gas (utilized) 2449 million cu. m., Petroleum (crude) 28 LT, Bauxite 2234 thousand tonnes, Chromite 436 thousand tonnes, Copper conc. 12 thousand tonnes, Gold 97 kg., Iron ore 185 LT, Lead conc. 26 thousand tonnes, Manganese ore 204 thousand tonnes, Zinc conc. 166 thousand tonnes, Apatite & Phosphorite 112 thousand tonnes, Limestone 263 lakh tonnes, Magnesite 21 thousand  tonnes  and Diamond  4929 carat.

Further, the production of important minerals showing positive growth during February 2017 over February 2016 include -- Apatite & Phosphorite (94.4%), Zinc conc. (83.9%), Lead conc. (25.5%), Chromite (24.6%), Bauxite (20.4%), Diamond (18.7%), Iron ore (13.3%), Manganese ore (8.6%) and Coal (6.7%). The production of other important minerals showing negative growth are Magnesite (-) 11.9%, Lignite (-) 8.9%, Gold (-) 4.0%, Petroleum (crude) (-) 3.5%, Copper conc. (-) 3.3%, Natural gas (utilized) (-) 1.8% and Limestone (-) 1.5%.
