Asian equity benchmarks are trading up in the early deals on Friday, following the overnight rally on Wall Street amid renewed hopes of tax reform in the US after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin indicated that the Trump administration plans to unveil a major tax reform plan very soon. Investors also continued to keep an eye on developments in France following news that a policeman was shot dead in Paris in a suspected terrorist attack just days before the presidential election. Japanese stocks rose to 1-1/2 week highs as global investors bet that US tax reforms are getting back on track, but Fujifilm Holdings tumbled after it delayed its earnings release due to an accounting probe. Meanwhile, Hong Kong stocks pressed higher, following a surge on Wall Street after the US treasury secretary said a plan to overhaul US taxes would be presented soon.
Nikkei 225 gained 145.6 points or 0.79% to 18,576.09, Shanghai Composite increased 2.3 points or 0.07% to 3,174.40, FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI added 10.76 points or 0.62% to 1,752.37, KOSPI Index spurt 17.98 points or 0.84% to 2,167.13, Hang Seng strengthened by 18.18 points or 0.08% to 24,075.16, Jakarta Composite rose 32.55 points or 0.58% to 5,627.86, Taiwan Weighted jumped 77.63 points or 0.81% to 9,710.32, and Straits Times was up by 14.88 points or 0.47% to 3,152.76.
