SAIL to augment steel capacity to 19 million tonnes in current fiscal

Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is planning to augment steel capacity to 19 million tonnes from 14 million tonnes in the current fiscal. On the back of ongoing modernisation and expansion projects, the capacity will rise to 24 million tonnes in one and half years.

Besides Rs 20,000 crore funding in various plants in West Bengal, the company is also planning for speciality steel at Kulti. The said project possibly has capacity of 1.2 million tonne and will draw fresh investments of Rs 6,000-7,000 crore for supply to speciality sectors like defence.

SAIL manufactures and sells a wide variety of steel products such as hot and cold rolled sheets and coils, galvanised sheets, electrical sheets, structurals, railway products, plates, bars and rods, stainless steel and other alloy steels. It also produces long and flat steel products, which is in demand in the domestic as well in international market.
