India’s refinery production rises by 4.7% in June

26 Jul 2011 Evaluate

The domestic refiners production increased by 4.7% in June 2011 compared to June 2010, this is the seventh successive growth in refiners output. The speed of growth also gained momentum in June from May due to improvement in output from private refiners. For the April-June 2011 period the domestic refiners output increased by 5.3% over the corresponding period of last year. During June, Indian refiners processed around 3.454 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil, while collective crude output of private refineries was down an annual 0.8% compare to 4.4% in May.

Reliance Industries, whose two refineries at Jamnagar in western Gujarat state account for about a third of India's refining capacity, does not report data for its 580,000 bpd export-focused plant to the government. The production at Reliance’s largest 660,000 bpd plant reduced by 1.5% in June, whereas Essar Oil’s 280,000 bpd Vadinar refinery, registered a positive growth compare to May, it increased by 0.8% from last year. However, government’s statement did not mention any reason for lower crude oil processing by private refiners.

The crude processing by the state increased by 7.1% in June, when global refining margins weakened and a hydrocracker unit was shut at Indian Oil Corp's biggest 300,000 bpd Panipat plant. Crude processing by 120,000 bpd Bina refinery in central India, which came on-stream earlier this year, has not so far been included in the data.

However, India’s crude oil production for the month of June declined from May. In June, it increased by 7.7% compare to 9.6% in May, this moderation in output is due to fall in production from India’s largest producer Mumbai High fields.

During the month of June, the production of natural gas reduced by 11.7% to 3.97 billion cubic meters from last year because production from Reliance-operated D6 block in the east coast reduced after touching 60 million cubic per day. Asia’s third largest economy is world’s fourth largest crude oil importer; it produces a very small amount of its overall demand.
