In a major relief to the six accused of 2G scam case, the CBI court has permitted their abroad travel in June for various reasons. Former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwa, DB Hospitality’s vice-chairman-cum-MD Vinod Goenka, Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables director Asif Balwa, Cineyug Films director Karim Morani and Unitech MD Sanjay Chandra can jaunt out of country.

Special CBI judge O P Saini has granted this permission to the accused except Behura on a surety bond worth Rs 20 lakh and the former telecom secretary has been ordered to furnish a bond worth Rs 5 lakh, considering he is a “retired public servant”. Saini said 'the six accused are facing trial in a very serious matter and it is incumbent upon them to be available... for facing trial. However, at the same time, travelling is a natural incident of human life and should not normally be denied without any valid reason.'

Behura wished to travel Bangkok and Hong Kong while Shahid and Asif Balwa wanted to perform religious pilgrimage in Mecca. Sanjay Chandra sought permission to travel to Hong Kong and Shanghai and some other countries in Europe while Karim Morani had pleaded to travel to London and Amsterdam. Besides this, other accused DMK MP Kanimozhi has also placed petition to be permitted to visit her native state Tamil Nadu on the occasion of the birthday of her father and party patriarch M Karunanidhi on June 3 which is likely to be heard today.
