IOC, LanzaTech to construct world’s first refinery off gas-to-bioethanol production facility in India

11 Jul 2017 Evaluate

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has inked a Statement of Intent with LanzaTech, carbon recycling company, to construct the world’s first refinery off gas-to-bioethanol production facility in India. The basic engineering for the 40 million litres (35 K MTA) per annum demonstration facility will begin later this year for installation at IOC’s  Panipat Refinery in Hayrana at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. It will be integrated into existing site infrastructure and will be LanzaTech’s first project capturing refinery off-gases.

LanzaTech’s technology allows refineries to divert waste gases from the grid, supporting the transition to fully renewable power, while recycling this carbon into liquid fuels and petrochemicals. The ethanol produced from the recycling of the refinery’s off-gases is expected to have a greenhouse gas emissions savings of over 70 per cent compared to conventional gasoline.

IOC is the largest enterprise in the country and the foremost ranked Fortune Global 500 Company in India and has presence in the complete hydrocarbon value chain from downstream refining & marketing, pipeline transportation, Petrochemicals, E&P and Gas Marketing.
