The production of cotton is estimated at 337.25 lakh bales (one bale is of 170 kg) for the 2016-17 crop year as per the June estimates. As per Cotton Association of India (CAI), this June estimate is similar to the May projection. In its May projection, CAI had estimated 336.25 lakh bales for the 2016-17 crop year, beginning from October 1.
Cotton production stood at 337.75 lakh bales the previous crop year. The projected balance sheet drawn by the CAI estimated total cotton supply for the season at 409.25 lakh bales while the domestic consumption is estimated at 305 lakh bales.
As per the CAI estimate, over 95% of the crop for the season has already arrived in the market.
