Fending for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress party president Sonia Gandhi claimed that charges levied against him and party are baseless. Although, Gandhi didn’t name Team Anna who has demanded investigations against Singh and other Ministers, she said that “we will have to fight fiercely against such allegations.”

“In a democracy, it is the job of the opposition to oppose but the manner in which opposition and some anti- Congress elements are, as part of a conspiracy, leveling baseless allegations against the Prime Minister, the UPA government, the party and some of our colleagues, is a matter of regret,” Gandhi said at the Congress working committee meeting.

The ruling party’s high command’s statement comes in the back drop of allegations made by the father of anti-corruption movement in India - Anna Hazare and his team who has been demanding special investigation team (SIT) to probe coalgate scam in which PM and other 14 ministers are allegedly involved.

As per a report presented by CAG, government has incurred a loss worth Rs 180,000 crore ($40 billion) in the allocation of coal blocks during 2004-09 to the private companies. The report, when presented, had caused disruptions of business in both the houses.
