With President Elections around the corner, various names across the nation are buzzing to succeed Pratibha Patil, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s possibility was to a greater extent then any other political veteran. However, Congress party high command has hinted at ruling out Mukherjee’s possibility during the meeting of Congress Working Committee.
As per the routine act of Congress party, the President candidate is elected by the party President. This time the resolution to select party nominees for this year’s presidential election was moved by Mukherjee himself. However, in this confused tradition, there are ominous signs for Mukherjee’s candidacy. “Normally, the loser in a leadership contest is asked to move the consensus resolution,” said a party general secretary. Another party veteran, when asked about Mukherjee’s chances as the next president, said “This is the Congress party and you can rule out nothing here.”
With the economy’s gloomy performance during the UPA-2 tenure, Pranab Mukherjee has been assigned with the task of answering the India Inc and media over various issues which have sent India in grim state. Sonia Gandhi has already pressed the panic button and sent the party in election mode by asking all members to gear up for 2014 elections.
