Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Wednesday as the American currency firmed up overseas and a weak domestic equity market also put pressure on the rupee. Rupee fell further by tracking losses in the Asian currencies market after the US and North Korea exchanged threats amid escalating tensions between the two nations. On the global front, the yen hit an eight-week high against the dollar and made broad gains against other peers on Wednesday, reacting to the latest bout of geopolitical tensions stemming from the Korean Peninsula.
The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 63.77, weaker by 14 paise from its previous close of 63.63 on Tuesday. The currency touched a high and low of 63.8075 and 63.7550 respectively. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) reference rate for the dollar stood at 63.73 and for Euro stood at 75.28 on August 08, 2017. While the RBI’s reference rate for the Yen stood at 57.63, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 83.14. The reference rates are based on 12 noon rates of a few select banks in Mumbai.
