Trouble appears to be “never-ending” for the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram as he will be facing trial in the Madras High Court over his election to the Lok Sabha in 2009. The Madras High Court has refused Chidambaram’s petition to quash the petition filed by Raja Kannappan from AIADMK party. The court has, however, out of 29 removed two charges pertaining to alleged use of bank officials and banks in connection with Chidambaram’s election.

Kannappan, who had lost the election to Chidambaram from Sivaganga constituency by marginally 3,354 votes, had filed the petition on June 25, 2009. Kannappan’s petition has accused Chidambaram for exercising ‘corrupt practices’ and ‘manipulation’ of votes with the help of his agents. The AIADMK party member has also demanded recounting of votes of entire constituency and declaration of 2009 Lok Sabha elections as “void”.

Following this news, the largest opposition party - BJP demanded Chidambaram’s resignation. The BJP president Nitin Gadkari has reminded Prime Minister and Sonia Gandhi that they have claimed to stop corruption and by not acting against Union Home Minister.

“Chidambaram should have resigned long time back. I appeal to the Prime minister to remove him from cabinet. He has no moral right to be on his post. No action against Chidambaram means that the Congress party is tolerating corruption,” Gadkari said.

P Chidambaram has been in news recently for his involvement in the 2G Spectrum Scam. It has been alleged that Chidambaram made use of his position to allow his son Karti Chidambaram obtain kickbacks from Maxis. The Janta party chief Subramanian Swamy had accordingly presented the evidence against Karti to the media and had demanded CBI probe. Besides this, BJP president had claimed of having evidence of Chidambaram’s involvement in the scam.
