India’s sugar production may rise 24% to 25.1 MT in 2017-18: ISMA

The production of sugar is estimated to rise 24% to 25.1 million tonnes (MT) in the next marketing year starting October on higher sugarcane area. As per industry body Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), there would be sufficient availability of sugar in the country as it estimates output at 25.1 MT next season and an opening stock of 4 MT.

The industry body estimates the production to rise in all states except Tamil Nadu. In Uttar Pradesh, the production could rise to around 10 MT in the 2017-18 season.

Sugar production in the world’s second largest producer after Brazil, is estimated at 20.2 MT in the ongoing 2016-17 marketing year (October-September).
