Congress leader Narayan Rane has quit the Congress party. Rane who was the Revenue Minister in the Congress announced the decision in Sindhudurg in Maharashtra. Rane alleged that he was quitting the party and said that the party had repeatedly gone back on its promises made to him. He said that ‘The Congress did not know to utilize me. They are not interested in growing as a party. What will you remove me from the party; I myself am quitting the party. Today the Congress will come to know my importance how from every district people will quit the party’.

Speculations have been on the rise for a while that Rane would quit the party and the Congress had even tried to dangle the carrot of making him the Maharashtra Congress Chief, however the deal had to be rescinded for two reasons, there was tremendous opposition within the Congress for Rane being given any such deal and secondly the Congress leadership realized that Rane was using the Congress overtures to bargain with the BJP.

Anticipating his decision the Congress has taken the hardnosed approach and to prevent any Congressmen from joining Rane has already dissolved its Sindhudurg units which is known as a Rane stronghold. Once known as a staunch Sena loyalist, he was the Sena’s Chief Minister for six months in 1999. However he quit the party in 2005 after a fall out with Uddhav. He joined the Congress after quitting the Sena however he had frequent run ins with the party leadership. Rane’s elder son Nilesh is a former Congress MP and his youngest son Nitesh is a MLA.
