Mukherjee likely to be crowned as “President”; TMC still supports Kalam

Race for Raisina Hill has gathered steam, the final meet of UPA-II is underway in New Delhi and new President will be announced by today evening. Pranab Mukherjee remains the frontrunner in the race. As revealed by few media agencies, incumbent finance minister is slated to resign on June 24, 2012 and will file the nomination papers by June 25, 2012. Mukherjee, if selected as president, will be incumbent in Rashtrapati Bhawan from July 22, 2012 onwards.

However, the Congress’ largest ally Trinamool congress is still adamant on its candidate - former President - APJ Abdul Kalam. Mamata Banerjee has appealed to all the parties to support Kalam and said that he will contest Presidential polls and Smajwadi Party continues to support her. In this high end political drama, the outside supporter of UPA-II Samajwadi Party has said that the party is although with Mamata Banerjee, has refused to be by TMC’s side if the Congress ally attempts to destabilize the alliance. Samajwadi Party possesses 6% of voting rights while Trinamool Congress has 4.37% votes.

On the other hand, the opposition BJP led alliance NDA has failed to reach consensus over its preferred president. The meet of the NDA was indecisive Janata Dal (United) Sharad Yadav objected to supporting Kalam.
