India’s spices export increases by 21% in Q1

India’s spices export for the first quarter of current fiscal year registered an increase of 21% in value; however, it registered a decline of 26% in terms of quantity. The spices exports reached to 1,16,900 tonnes valued at Rs 1885.24 crore. For April-June 2011, exports earning in terms of dollars increased by 23% to $421.55 million. For same period, total spices exports were around 1,57,850 tonnes valued at Rs 1560.47 crore.

The export of pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg etc has risen in both revenue and quantity. However, exports of chilli, coriander, cumin, and curries powder recorded a decline in the first quarter. On the other hand, exports of mint and spice oils and oleoresins registered moderation in terms of quantity however increased in terms of revenues. 

As per the official data, exports of pepper touched 5750 tonnes worth around Rs 150.37 crore, it saw jump of 21% in quantity and 88% in revenue. Exports of small cardamom increased by 590 tonne valued at Rs 58.19 crore, it saw an increase of 219% in terms of quantity and 175% in terms of revenues.

However, exports of chilli declined in both terms (quantity and revenue), exports of chilli reduced by 37% in terms of quantity stood at 40,500 tonnes and it fell by 6% in terms of revenue stood at Rs 365.75 crore. The exports of mint also saw moderation in terms of quantity, its exports fell by 12% in terms of quantity, and it stood at 3150 tonnes. However, in terms of revenue exports of mint increased by 51% it stood at Rs 371.705 crore.

Likewise exports of spice oils and oleoresins were also down in quantity and up in revenue. Its exports fell by 2% in terms quantity to 1820 tonnes, however, its revenue earning from exports increased by 46% to Rs 300.95 crore.
