India’s CPI - inflation like the WPI rose slightly in May

The annual rate of inflation, based on the consumer prices index (CPI) in India, inched up slightly in the month of May to 10.36 percent, in line with the trend also shown by wholesale price index (WPI) inflation. According to the data released by Central Statistics Office, provisional annual inflation rate based on all India general CPI (Combined) for May 2012 on point to point basis stood at 10.36% as compared to 10.26% for the previous month of April 2012.

All India provisional General (all groups), CPI numbers of May 2012 for rural, urban and combined were at 119.1, 117.1 and 118.2 respectively, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, which released the monthly provisional CPI on Base 2010=100 along with annual inflation rates for May 2012. The corresponding inflation rates for rural and urban areas for May came in at 9.57% and 11.52% as against April’s  9.67% and 11.10%, which indicated that the rate of price rise rose in urban areas while that in the rural areas eased slightly.

The slight rise in CPI mainly resulted due to the increase in prices of vegetables, edible oils and milk. On a year-on-year basis in May, the highest spurt was witnessed in vegetable prices, which registered 26.59 percent rise, while edible oil prices shot up by 18.21 percent and prices of milk products jumped 13.74 percent. Moreover, prices of egg, fish and meat surged 10.50 percent and non-alcoholic beverages soared 9.44 percent while that of fuel and light, and clothing, bedding and footwear segments remained in double-digits.
