India’s tea production declined by 23.25% to 145.83 million kg in September 2017 compared to 190 million kg in September 2016. As per data compiled by the Tea Board, the tea output declined owing to the massive crop loss in Assam and West Bengal.
The North Indian production that comprises the estates of Assam and West Bengal has dropped by 25% in the month of September due to excessive rains. The production in North India stood at 127.54 million kg in September 2017 in comparison to 169.68 million kg in September 2016. The decline in Assam tea estates is 31 million kg in September while the production in Dooars and Terai regions of West Bengal has declined by around 9 million kg owing to climatic adversities.
Besides, the South Indian tea production has dropped marginally to 18.29 million kg in September 2017 in comparison to 20.32 million kg in September 2016.
