With the new twist taking place in the BJP led coalition almost everyday, today finally the opposition party has named its preferred candidate for the presidential poll - P. A. Sangma. However, this has created rift within NDA as the other parties viz., Shiv Sena and JD(U) in the coalition has decided to back the Congress candidate and current finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Sangma has requested to both the said parties and Trinamool Congress party, which is the largest ally of Congress, to back him. Sangma said “I am not a candidate of any single party. My name has been sponsored by two powerful chief ministers of the country. I am grateful to both these leaders. I am very happy that BJP has also taken a stand to support my candidature. Not only BJP but other allies like Akali Dal, JMM and other smaller parties have assured their support. They have told me that they will stand by the decision of NDA.” Sangma is very hopeful of Mamata Banerjee supporting him as the first choice Kalam has backed out from the race.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said Sangma is a prestigious leader in the country and a very tall leader in the North-East. BJP were happy to back Sangma for the job, she added. By adding further, she said, BJP will not give Congress a walkover in the President poll. NDA was still undecided on presidential candidate. NDA met over the issue more than ones but we could not come to a consensus with all our allies, she added. The JD-U and the Shiv Sena are not in agreement with us on President Candidate.
