Rupee weakens on fresh dollar demand from importers

17 Apr 2018 Evaluate

Indian rupee weakened against US dollar on Tuesday on account of fresh dollar demand from importers. However, a weak dollar against other currencies overseas capped the rupee's losses. On the global front, the dollar steadied on Tuesday as the market’s focus shifted back to US trade policy as investors wagered US-led attacks on Syria would not escalate into a wider conflict in the Middle East.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 65.63, weaker by 14 paise from its previous close of 65.49 on Monday. The currency touched a high and low of 65.6375 and 65.4000 respectively. The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) reference rate for the dollar stood at 65.44 and for Euro stood at 80.73 on April 16, 2018. While the RBI’s reference rate for the Yen stood at 61.02, the reference rate for the Great Britain Pound (GBP) stood at 93.27. The reference rates are based on 12 noon rates of a few select banks in Mumbai.
