The UPA’s presidential candidate - Pranab Mukherjee’s countrywide has reached his home town Kolkata wherein he will be seeking support of the political leaders. Former Finance Minister got a warm welcome from the Congress party at Kolkata Airport, while UPA’s largest ally Trinamool Congress tagged him as ‘Maoists’ friend’.
“Today I have come to Kolkata. Tomorrow (Monday) I will hold a meeting with the MLAs (legislators) of Congress, CPI-M and Forward Bloc inside the premises of state assembly. Then I will talk to the media persons,” said UPA’s presidential candidate.
West Bengal’s ruling party is yet to decide on its presidential candidate and at the same time it is opposing Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature. The party chief and state’s chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to reveal her preferred candidate only two-three days prior to the voting i.e., on July, 19, 2012.
Meanwhile, TMC’s Subrata Mukherjee who is also West Bengal’s panchayet minister said “When Pranab babu began his political career in Bangla Congress in the 1960s, he was helped by the Marxists and remained a friend of the CPI-M even in the middle of his career. And now, when he is leaving party politics, he is again receiving help from the Left parties. He has been a very close friend of the CPI-M all through his life.”
