Poor rainfall in Karnataka, Maharashtra cause of concern: Agriculture Minister

12 Jul 2012 Evaluate

The Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has voiced his concern over less rainfall in Karnataka and Central Maharashtra despite improvement in rainfall situation in last 10 days across the country. This deficit in rain could affect the production of coarse cereals and supply of drinking water.

Briefing about the progress of monsoon and the sowing of kharif crops, Agriculture Minister stated that due to deficit in rainfall, the situation has not improved to the satisfactory level in these two states. The coarse cereal (bajra, jowar and maize) production and drinking water supply still remains the cause of concern.

On the other hand, sowing of Kharif (summer) crop across the country is not affected by deficit rainfall, as planting of paddy, cotton, sugarcane and oilseeds is expected to pick up. Besides, sowing of rice which is considered as the main kharif crop is also in progress. Due to good rains in Orissa and Chattisgarh there should not be any problem in paddy area.

Besides, in the last two days Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh state have received good rains due to which the planting of groundnut and soyabean is expected to improve. The only problem which exists is of coarse cereals and the situation is poor. By now 50% sowing operation is over but it can be extended up to the first week of August.

Further, due to rain deficit there have been no problem on availability of food grains and no large impact on prices, the Agriculture Minister stated.
