India’s rainfall is still lacking by 23%, albeit it has covered the entire country, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The agriculture ministry has expressed concerns on scanty rains in Karnataka and central Maharashtra, while the rainfall has improved across the country in last 10 days. Less rainfall in these two states is likely to impact the supply of drinking water and production of coarse cereals, like bajra, jowar and maize.

Good rainfall is reported in Orissa and Chattisgarh, with progress seen in sowing of rice, the main kharif crop. The planting of groundnut and soyabean is also expected to improve as good rains had been reported from parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh. The IMD anticipates that monsoon rain will shift to Himalayas, Terai and north east region soon and is likely to continue with 23% reduction in rain until next week.

Monsoon rains are crucial for Indian agriculture sector, which contributes about 15% to the country's GDP, while only 40% of the total cultivable area is under irrigation. India had marked a record production of 252.56 million tonne of food grains in 2011-12 crop year (July-June) on good monsoon last year.
