Riding high on the caste factor and backing of the BJP’s popular leader BS Yeddyurappa, Jagadish Shivappa Shettar has sworn in as chief minister of Karnataka. Shettar is the BJP’s third chief minister of the southern state in mere four years.

The successor of DV Sadananda Gowda, Shettar had faced the defeat for the same post a year ago when the former was supported by Yeddyurappa who had to quiet after being named in the illegal mining case.

Shettar, just a day prior to taking over as chief minister, was caught in the illegal land deal and accordingly a case was lodged in the Karnataka court. It has been alleged that Shettar has illegally freed the 178 acres of land located at the outskirts of Bangalore from the control of government during his tenure as revenue minister. On July 21, 2012, the ombudsman court Judge NK Sudhindra Rao will be considering if the investigations need to be ordered.
