SCI to get Rs 500 crore from govt to purchase ships

The government will give Rs 500 crore to Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) under the Sagarmala programme to purchase ships in the international market and lease it out domestically. The ships will be used for cruise tourism, roll on roll off services which entail ferrying cars through the sea route and also ro-pax where a car carrying passengers is ferried in a boat.

SCI is the only Indian shipping company operating break-bulk service, international container service, liquid / dry bulk service, offshore service, passenger service, in addition to manning / managing a large number of vessels on behalf of various government departments and organizations.
