Tripura Govt to provide rice at Rs 2 per kg for BPL families

The Tripura government has decided to provide rice at the rate of Rs 2 per kg through public distribution system (PDS) from next month onwards for people living below poverty line (BPL). The decision to provide rice at subsidized rate was taken at the meeting of the Council of Ministers held on July 12. The decision comes ahead of state assembly elections which is due in February 2013.

Rice was sold at the rate of Rs 6.15 per kg for 181,876 ration card holders living under BPL category. They will be now receiving the rice at Rs 2 per kg. The number of cards under Antodyay Annayojana category is 113,124 and these people who were initially getting rice at the rate of Rs 3 per kg would also get rice at Rs 2 per kg.

Altogether 15 lakh people in the state would be benefited from the scheme. Population of Tripura is 3,671,032 of which 68% people are in the BPL category.
